Racism isn’t just internment camps, burning crosses and lynch mobs. It’s also the idea that Whiteness is a default for humanity and everyone else is subject to hyphens & probing microaggressions (casual expressions of oppressive prejudice) like these, which are all too common.
When I tweeted this picture by Alexandra Dal, it resonated with hundreds and hundreds of people. I’ve never had so many retweets or notifications from any single image or idea. These aren’t rare or isolated incidents because they’re occurring in personal interactions. When people ask why everything has to be about race, this is an example of why: Existing while non-White is about race at any given moment whether you want to acknowledge it or not.
