Feminism: It’s Not Just For The Ladies

Feminism.

Yes. I know that word has really gotten a bad reputation lately. It’s associated with loud-mouthed women who turn everything into a rambling sexist agenda, hypersexual ladies who preach ownership of their vaginas and afros galore.

Blah, blah, blah. I’m here to challenge that perception. Let’s take a slightly deeper look at what the term REALLY means…

feminism (noun):

  • the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities
  • organized activity in support of women’s rights and interests

The above is one definition of feminism, courtesy of Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary. Do you know what I find most intriguing about it? In no way is it exclusive to women.

Yes. Men can be feminists.

That may seem counterintuitive to many, but to me? It makes absolutely perfect sense. I think I can even consider myself a feminist and/or womanist, much like John Brougher declared in a recent CNN article
