#OpenSeasonOnBlackGirlsIsOver, R. Kelly Fans

Yes, you, blasting Kells’ Pied Piper greatest hits, bragging about your proud fandom because musical geniuses are usually eccentric but the freaky music is so fun. Please promptly go to hell & await your fave to join you.
To backtrack, my morning began as a tale of two R. Kelly articles: one from an educated Black woman who loves that R. Kelly’s music is “outrageous” and “an exercise in musical foolishness.”
Robert Kelly was acquitted in a court-of-law by jurors who did watch the sex-tape. That’s pretty much the end of that story for me. I’m not pretending to be dumb to the suspicion that he may have a proclivity for younger women… If R. Kelly is to every be proven guilty of assaulting underage women, a whole lot of people (including myself) are going to have to eat their google-searchable-internet-published words and condemn his behavior and separate from his music.
I see. So… a known sexual predator likening himself to myths about luring away children, singing about the arbitrary nature of age with his child-bride and regularly prowling high school parking lots in your city is all “suspicion.” If you liken child pornography to adult celebrity sex tapes, if you feel emboldened by the justice system’s track record with punishing sexual assault against Black girls & women, but reduce the lived experiences of dozens of victims to rumor, “appalled” isn’t even the word.
Well, I’m happy Ms. Davenport’s pro-Black, pro-woman world has enough shades of gray to be an apologist for R. Kelly. However, that doesn’t fly over here or in the second article I read today: The “Stomach-Churning” Sexual Assault Accusations Against R. Kelly in Full. DeRogatis, who originally covered the sex crimes investigation of R. Kelly 15 years ago, details the public records of lawsuits from numerous victims and the pain that continues to haunt them.
To this day, any reporter who so cares can go to Cook County and pull these records, so it drives me crazy, even with some of the eloquent reconsiderations we’ve seen of Kelly in recent days, that they keep saying “rumors” and “allegations”… The videotapes–and not just one videotape, numerous videotapes. And not Tommy Lee/Pam Anderson, Kardashian fun video. You watch the video for which he was indicted and there is the disembodied look of the rape victim.
The methodology of investigation, descriptions of abundant evidence and the stories of numerous victims preyed upon by R. Kelly, and official court documents are all laid out for anyone tempted to revise history on his behalf. Open Season on Black Girls is Over. That means no silencing or excusing away the pain or truth or existence of Black girls vulnerable to a world more than willing to exploit them.
The saddest fact I’ve learned is nobody matters less to our society than young black women. Nobody. They have any complaint about the way they are treated: they are “bitches, hos and gold diggers,” plain and simple… Kelly was fully capable of intimidating people. These girls feared for their lives. They feared for the safety of their family.
Although enjoying the good work of bad people is subjective and unavoidable (Woody Allen, Charlie Chaplin, Roman Polanski, and J.D. Salinger are also undeniably & extremely talented), there will be absolutely no excuses made for those who prey on minors and children. There is nothing to get over when so many young women may never recover from the scars R. Kelly has left. Save your defense and victim-blaming and choke on it.
